Special Training in specific subjects

After their first report in October-November pupils in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd forms can be placed in a variety of specialist training programmes. Placement is decided upon after the mentors have spoken with their pupils (and their parents). Also the teachers´ meeting is consulted. Fundamental in this process is the quest for the causes of disappointing achievements.
The first three years of our school offers a choice of the following Training Programmes.
Pupils who have achieved substandard results in one or more subjects can be placed in Special Training groups. They get extra lessons in small groups for a certain period.
These Training Programmes are designed for pupils who lack enough training in certain aspects of a subject, or find the totality of the curriculum too heavy a burden to be completely successful in their studies. For the first form Dutch, Latin, French and Mathematics have special Training Programmes. The second form adds German and Greek, while the third form also offers a Special Training Programme for Physics.

Social Skills and Reduction of Fear of Failing
Pupils whose results are influenced by a fear of failing or a lack in social skills are – after due consultation – referred to two specially trained teachers, who coach these pupils individually or in small groups.
For the sixth form e special Examination Fear Reduction Programme has been developed.

Homework Coaching
Pupils who have difficulty in planning and doing their homework are coached in small groups by a number of our teachers. The 1st form has 3 coaching hours a week. The 2nd and 3rd forms have one lesson per week each.

Study Skills
This training is targeted at 2nd and 3rd form pupils who have structural problems in certain skills. The training focuses on teaching learning skills like: vocabulary, topography, summary writing.

Substandard Achievements
Every year knows a few disappointments: pupils who are obviously endowed with sufficient talents, but who nevertheless fail to meet the school’s demands. Based on the concept of Emotional Intelligence we have developed a strategy to assist these pupils. This training aims at the pupil’s awareness of the cause of their poor results and thus motivate them to bring their schoolwork up to standard.

Homework Supervision
This offers pupils the opportunity to do (part of) their homework at school under supervision of a teacher who is also available for help. Supervising teachers come from various disciplines. Homework Supervision is organized on a daily basis and takes up one hour.

Dyslexia
Dyslectic pupils can benefit from a number of facilities within the school organization. For treatment and intensive training these pupils are usually referred to specialist outside the school.

At the beginning of each period parents get a letter stating what special training is advised for their child. Changes can be made after contact with the coordinator.
